Since the Industrial Revolution, product design and manufacturing have been dominated by the “cradle-to-grave” model in which manufacturing is a linear process of production, use, and disposal, which eventually leads to pollution.
By contrast, the “cradle-to-cradle” approach aims to design an industrial manufacturing process that facilitates recycling and reuse, thus posing less threat to humans and the environment.
At Eclat, we are committed to introducing the cradle-to-cradle design approach to many of our environmentally friendly products and have added a lifecycle dimension to the identification of environmental aspects in our environmental management system.
Eclat only uses chemicals that meet the standards of the bluesign® system. We are working together with our clients to reach the goal of zero discharge of hazardous chemicals (ZDHC). Eclat’s promotion of green manufacturing processes also speaks to its commitment to protect and cherish resources and the environment.
In the attempt to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help mitigate the impact of climate change, Eclat has made commitments to saving energy and reducing carbon emissions. We have made a number of improvements to enhance energy efficiency, including installing variable frequency controllers on high power equipment, updating and optimizing air compressors, and optimizing the boiler system.
In addition to improvements to machinery, we have also introduced many other measures to save energy: for example, reducing the use of cooling towers and air conditioning, and increasing our use of LED lights while decreasing the overall number of lights in factories and using clean energy. In day-to-day energy management, we also regularly monitor our greenhouse gas emissions and review our energy use.Since 2019, Eclat has completely eliminated coal-fire devices, saving the equivalent of 2,202 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually.
Eclat takes part in a Bureau of Energy project that has received guidance from an energy conservation team, and our efforts to conserve energy have won us an award for corporate excellence.
WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT
With the impact of climate change and the limitations posed by Taiwan’s environment, water resourceis increasingly precious.As a supplier for many global clothing brands, Eclat is committed to striking a balance between business development and environmental protection. Eclat allocates water use more efficiently and avoids wasting water under the principle of sustainable development. In addition to condensing and recycling in the process,Eclat is also committed to water recycling, and uses UF + RO technology to improve wastewater recovery. Eclat Vietnam Fabric Mill has achieved nearly 30% recovery.
In fact, Eclat does more than simply enhancing waste water recycling: we are also making every effort to minimize discharge from manufacturing processes, thus reducing waste water at the source. Dyeing textiles typically requires massive amounts of water, so minimizing water use will also reduce waste water and environmental pollution.
Eclat is committed to improving of the dyeing and finishing processes and the developing new technology to find replacements for water resources. At present, Eclat Dayuan Mill has some Eco-dye machines in operationfor environmentally friendly production.
Eclat encourages all employees to find ways to improve our manufacturing and reduce our impact on the environment. We pledge to abide by the following environmental, health and safety, and energy policies in our management system:
1. Complying with laws and regulations and being responsive to public expectations;
2. Reducing our impact on the environment;
3. Enhancing training and mobilizing the whole company to take part in environmental and safety programs;
4. Ensuring the effectiveness of day-to-day management so as to protect the environment and enhance safety;
5. Strengthening hazard prevention in order to create a safe working environment;
6. Preventing waste of resources to ensure the company’s sustainability.
7. Improving communication and promoting partnership.
As we know, global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions poses serious risks to the global economy and human life. To fulfill its remit, we have conducted inventory of greenhouse gas emissions since 2016, controlled the situation of greenhouse gas emissions, and further carried out related plans for reduction. The 2017 inventory boundary includes all branch mills of Eclat, and we set 2017 as the baseline year then achieve the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emission intensity per unit product by 5% in 2020. In order to achieve this goal, Eclat has initiated a series of energy saving control measures, including the energy management system ISO 50001, phasing out outdated chiller units,and replacing lightbulbs with LED lights, and implementing a range of operational controls. We also respond to the requirements of various stakeholders by formulating the “climate change risk management operating procedures” to disclosure the climate-related risk and financial impact in accordance with the TCFD disclosure framework and recommendations. The board of directors is the guiding unit and the CSR committee is the implementing unit.
Furthermore, in order to ensure the effectiveness of our environmental management system, Eclat obtained ISO 14001, Oeko-Tex 1000, and bluesign® certification. In 2017, Eclat also began voluntarily inventory of greenhouse gases and received the ISO 14064-1 verification statement.
